Carbuncle

Research Notes on Carbuncle

A carbuncle is a deep skin infection that involves a group of infected hair follicles in one skin location. It is usually found on the back of the neck, shoulders, hips and thighs, and is commonly seen in middle-aged or elderly men. Diabetic patients are more likely to develop carbuncles.

Fast Facts:

  • A skin infection that only occurs in a single hair follicle or oil gland is called a boil. If several boils appear in a group, it is called a carbuncle.
  • It usually heals within 2 weeks through the use of antibacterial soaps and antibiotics.
