Research Notes on Capsular Contracture
A capsular contracture is one of the most common risks of breast implants. As the breast heals around the implant after surgery, the implant is enclosed in a capsule of scar tissue. Complications arise when the capsule contracts and puts pressure on the implant, resulting in pain, irregular shape, and a hardening of the breast. There are four different grades of breast capsular contracture.1
Fast Facts:
- Grade I capsular contracture: The breast is normally soft, and appears natural.2
- Grade II capsular contracture: The breast looks natural but feels a little firm.2
- Grade III capsular contracture: The breast looks abnormal and feels firm.2
- Grade IV capsular contracture: The breast is hard, painful, and appears abnormal.2
