Research Notes on Capillary Sample
Collecting a blood sample by pricking the skin is called a capillary sample. A few drops of blood are collected and then put onto a test strip, a slide or in a small container for testing. Using a capillary sample has several advantages; it is easy to obtain, plenty of collection sites, and with little training it can be done at home. It can be used to provide a diagnosis for many medical conditions.1
Fast Facts:
- The first drop of blood should not be used.2
- The tip or pad of the finger may hurt more because there are more nerves in those locations.2
- If a large blood sample is needed, blood drawn from a vein may be needed instead.1
