Research Notes on Chronic Pain
Chronic pain was originally defined as pain that has lasted six months or longer. It is a pain that persists for days, months and even years. It can be from a past injury or from illnesses like arthritis, fibromyalgia or cancer pain.
Fast Facts:
- The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage."
- Pain is a response to an injury of some kind, or an illness that the patient may not have diagnosed yet.
- Depression and anxiety are two symptoms of chronic pain.
- Chronic pain is treated in a number of ways, from medications to interventional therapy, rehabilitation, behavioral therapy and biofeedback.
