Research Notes on Cancer Genome Decoded
For the first time, scientists have decoded the complete genome of a cancer patient and were able to trace her disease to its genetic roots. Ten gene mutations which were key in the development of the woman's acute myeloid leukemia (or AML) were identified by a team at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.1
Fast Facts:
- AML treatment varied little over past decades because the genetics behind the disease had been unknown.2
- Researchers feel these new findings will help create more effective therapies and aid doctors in better treatment choices.3
- Although this study only involved leukemia, other cancers could be studied using the same techniques.3
- This study was published in the journal Nature.2
