Research Notes on Can Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis be Passed Down

The exact cause of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is not known. JRA is a multifactarial medical condition. There are many factors, genetics, infection and environment, that influence the immune system.1 Juvenile arthritis is not strictly hereditary and rarely affects more than one family member. However, researchers believe some children have genes that make them more likely to get the disease. Exposure to something in the environment (for example, a virus) can then trigger juvenile arthritis in these children.2

Fast Facts:

  • Juvenile arthritis is generally considered an autoimmune disease.
  • Juvenile arthritis is an uncommon disease characterized by inflammation of joints or connective tissue.3
  • There are some genetic markers in children with certain types of juvenile arthritis.
  • No more than 10% of children with a parent with arthritis will develop a similar condition.4
