Research Notes on Can Diabetes Be Prevented
There are different types of diabetes; depending on the type, it may be possible to prevent diabetes. In the case of type 1 diabetes, it is not known for sure what even causes it, although genetics may play a role. With that being said there is also no way to prevent type 1 diabetes.1 In the case of type 2 diabetes, which can be the result of certain lifestyle factors, you may be able to prevent it by making changes in your diet and developing an exercise regimen.2

- Pre-diabetes, which is thought to be a precursor to diabetes, can often be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle.3
- Gestational diabetes may be preventable if a healthy weight is maintained and you get regular exercise.4
- Approximately 90 to 95 percent of diagnosed diabetes are type 2 diabetes.5
