Research Notes on Campylobacter

Campylobacter bacteria, usually transmitted in contaminated food or water, can infect the gastrointestinal tract and cause diarrhea, fever, and cramps. Practicing good hand-washing and food safety habits will prevent campylobacter infections, which usually will clear up on their own but sometimes are treated with antibiotics.

Fast Facts:

  • Campylobacter is one of the most common bacterial causes of diarrheal illness in the United States.
  • The Campylobacter organism is actually a group of spiral-shaped bacteria that can cause disease in humans and animals.
  • Most human illness is caused by the bacteria Campylobacter jejuni.
