Research Notes on Calcium Channel Blocker Side Effects

Calcium channel blockers are a class of drugs and natural substances with effects on many excitable cells of the body, like the muscle of the heart, smooth muscles of the vessels or neuron cells. The main action of calcium channel blockers is to decrease the blood pressure. It is for this action that it is used in individuals with hypertension.1 Side effects of antihypertensive drugs can include feeling dizzy when you stand up after lying down or sitting, lowered levels of potassium in your blood, problems sleeping, drowsiness, dry mouth, headaches, bloating, constipation and depression.2

Fast Facts:

  • Verapamil and diltiazem have the greatest effects on the heart and reduce the strength and rate of contraction.3
  • When diltiazem or verapamil are given to individuals with heart failure, symptoms of heart failure may worsen because these drugs reduce the ability of the heart to pump blood.3
  • Grapefruit or grapefruit juice can interfere with your calcium channel blocker and increase your risk of side effects.4
