Research Notes on Calamus
Calamus is known by many names, including: bacc, flagroot, sweet cane, sweet flag, sweet grass, sweet root, sweet rush, vacha and bach.1 The herb has been used since Biblical times, both as a means of trade and in medicinal purposes.1 The herb was once banned as being unsafe due to potential toxicity of the plants volatile oil, but recent studies have shown that the North American species is safe to use.1
Fast Facts:
- Angina, arthritis, asthma, common colds, diarrhea, colic, epilepsy, fever, flatulence, gastritis, laryngitis, loss of appetite, sinusitis and ulcers have all been treated with calamus.2
- Can be used with other herbs such as ginger, wild yam, meadowsweet and marshmallow.1
- Should not be used in bleeding disorders, and excessive use can cause nausea and vomiting.2
