Caffeine and Calcium

Research Notes on Caffeine and Calcium

Caffeine is a substance that acts as a stimulant and a mild diuretic. It is present in coffee, tea, soft drinks, and energy drinks. Studies have found that caffeine can increase calcium excretion through the urine. This led to the speculation that caffeine can affect bone density due to calcium loss. However, more recent studies have shown that the calcium lost through the urine is negligible and that it does not predispose one to osteoporosis.
