Café au Lait Spots

Research Notes on Café au Lait Spots

Café au lait spots are flat, evenly pigmented spots with sharp borders which are usually oval in shape. As the name suggests (which means "coffee with milk" in french), they are light to medium brown in color. They are usually present at birth, however they can develop later in the first few years of life. They are much more common in black infants. A few of these spots are normal, however if there are more than a few on the skin, they can be possibly diagnostic of neurofibromatosis.
