Continuous Positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a method of respiratory ventilation used primarily in the treatment of sleep apnea, for which it was first developed. - Professor Colin Sullivan first developed the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure system at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1981.
- A CPAP machine increases air pressure in your throat so that your airway does not collapse when you breathe in.
- The CPAP machines blows air at a prescribed pressure. The necessary pressure is determined by a sleep physician after review of a sleep study.
