Research Notes on COPD and Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary function tests (PFT) are important in determining the severity of your chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).1 These tests can also be used to diagnose the disease. The tests are performed in your doctor's office or the hospital, and usually take about 30 minutes depending on the type of test performed.2
Fast Facts:
- One of the most common tests performed, a spirometry, is used to diagnose COPD.1
- You should not smoke for four hours prior to taking a pulmonary function test.2
- Do not exercise for thirty minutes prior to testing, or wear tight clothing for the test.2
