Research Notes on COPD and Diet
Although no diet can prevent or cure COPD, ensuring that you have a healthy diet can give your body the vitamins and nutrients that are needed to combat your condition. Being overweight taxes the organs of the body, including the lungs, so maintaining a proper body weight is important. Avoiding foods that cause gas can also reduce bloating and allow for easier breathing.1
Fast Facts:
- Eating six small meals, as opposed to three large ones, can reduce the pressure on the lungs by an overly full stomach.2
- Foods containing a high amount of sodium can cause the body to retain water and interfere with breathing.2
- Other tips for a healthy diet include limiting the amount of caffeine in the diet and to eat a wide variety of easy to prepare foods.2
