Research Notes on COPD Stages
There are four different stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a disease of the lungs which causes the airways to narrow. It is caused by noxious gases or foreign particles (like smoking) which trigger an inflammatory response in the lung.1
Fast Facts:
- Stage 0 means a person is at risk of COPD.2
- Stage 1 means a person has mild COPD; they are often unaware of their affliction.2
- Stage 2 means a person has moderated COPD; they suffer from shortness of breath during exertion.2
- Stage 3 means a person has severe COPD; the air supply is severely limited and supplementary oxygen is required.2
