Research Notes on COPD Risk Factors
There are several factors that can increase the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Some factors such as smoking, exposure to chemical fumes, dust, air pollution, and frequent, severe respiratory infections can be controlled, at least partially. Certain risk factors for COPD such as genetics or being born at a low birth weight cannot be controlled.1

- In some cases, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may cause COPD.2
- About 10% to 15% of those who smoke cigarettes develop COPD.1
- Most people are over forty years of age when symptoms of COPD begin.3
