There are several factors that can increase the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Some factors such as smoking, exposure to chemical fumes, dust, air pollution, and frequent, severe respiratory infections can be controlled, at least partially. Certain risk factors for COPD such as genetics or being born at a low birth weight cannot be controlled.1
