Research Notes on COPD Linked to Mental Decline
A recent study reveals that severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, may be associated with a high risk of cognitive impairment in the elderly. Earlier studies have linked impaired cognitive functions to COPD, but this is the first study to show the impact of COPD on mental performance over a period of time. COPD is a disease that affects the lungs, making it difficult to breathe.1
Fast Facts:
- Average cognitive scores of elderly with severe COPD were around a point lower than adults without COPD.2
- Over 4,100 individuals were included in this study.2
- Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are COPD conditions.1
- This study is published in the July 2009 issue of American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
