Research Notes on COPD Causes
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition in which the air passages to and from the lungs are partly blocked (obstructed). The number one cause of COPD is smoking. Although smokers account for about 80% to 90% of all COPD cases, only 15% of smokers develop this disease. Other causes of COPD include breathing in industrial or occupational fumes and dust for many years, heavy exposure to air pollution, and recurrent lung infections.
