Research Notes on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a medical term used to describe two different types of diseases affecting the lungs: emphysema and chronic bronchitis.1 Progressive damage to the lungs results in COPD. Smoking cigarettes is the most common cause of the damage that leads to COPD.2 Other irritants can also cause COPD; these include cigar smoke, secondhand smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes, and dust.3
