Research Notes on CDC Guidelines for Swine Flu
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for swine flu include recommendations for individuals, groups, and medical professionals on ways to avoid the H1N1 virus, prevent the spread of swine flu, care for the ill, medications that will help, and how to deal with an outbreak of the swine flu. The CDC recommends that schools try to stay open,1 sick children should be sent home,2 and antiviral medications should not be used unless you are in a high risk group.3

- Pregnant women, parents and caretakers of young children, health care workers, adults over 65 years of age, and children younger than five are included in the high risk group for swine flu.4
- The swine flu is caused by the H1N1 virus, which is a strain of influenza type A.5
- The most common symptoms associated with swine flu include fever, coughing, lethargy, and appetite loss.6
- Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen can help alleviate symptoms.7
- Treatment for swine flu may involve taking antiviral drugs to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications from developing.8
- Methods that may help prevent swine flu include washing your hands, covering your nose and mouth either with a tissue or coughing and sneezing into your arm.9
