Research Notes on CA-125 Testing
CA-125 is a cancer antigen, or a protein that is found on the surface of many ovarian cancer cells. CA-125 levels are often tested in those who have previously battled ovarian cancer as an increase in the level of CA-125 found in the blood can signal a recurrence of cancer. CA-125 testing is also performed as a way to measure the success of chemotherapy or other types of cancer treatments.1
Fast Facts:
- Although CA-125 is typically measured via a blood test, fluid removed from the chest or abdomen may also be tested for CA-125.2
- While CA-125 testing can be useful to help determine whether cancer has returned, the CA-125 test alone is not recommended for initial diagnosis.2
- Conditions such as pregnancy, endometriosis, pancreatitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and even menstruation can cause an elevated reading in CA-125 levels.2
