Also called a contusion, a bruise is an injury that damages capillaries, allowing blood to seep into the tissues. Most bruises go away within 2 weeks. Swelling may also be present.1 Bruising and swelling of the top of the foot may indicate a sprained ankle, broken ankle or broken foot.2
