Research Notes on Bronchiectasis Pathology

Large and medium-sized lung bronchi or airways (>2 mm diameter) are abnormally dilated in bronchiectasis. This process results from a weakening or damage of the smooth muscle fibers and elastic tissue in the bronchial walls.1 2 Inflammation is responsible for the damage. The cilia or tiny hairs that line the bronchi are also often damaged, making it difficult for the lungs to clear mucus and particulates. Infection can result and perpetuate the inflammatory response and bronchial damage.3

Fast Facts:

  • Bronchiectasis is rare in the U.S. population but has a prevalence of 10-20 per 1000 in the Alaska Native population.4
  • Bronchiectasis is one of many conditions that can mimic asthma.5 6
  • Patients with bronchiectasis, particularly if caused by cystic fibrosis, are potential candidates for lung transplantation.7
  • Individuals with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease appear to have a higher frequency of bronchiectasis as demonstrated by radiographs.8
