Research Notes on Bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis is a widening and destruction of the large airways, and is associated with a wide range of disorders. Bronchiectasis can result from bacterial infections. Bronchiectasis may be diagnosed with a CT scan as well as through blood work and sputum culture samples.

Fast Facts:

  • Bronchiectasis was researched by Sir William Osler in the late 1800s; and coincidently; it is suspected that he actually died of complications from undiagnosed bronchiectasis.
  • The most common symptom seen in bronchiectasis is a chronic cough that produces thick, white or green sputum (discharge).
  • About half of the cases of bronchiectasis are from cystic fibrosis. Other causes of bronchiectasis are severe pneumonia, whooping cough, tuberculosis , and immunodeficiency disorders, such as HIV infection and AIDS.
