Research Notes on Bronchial Challenge Test

Bronchial challenge testing is most often used to test for asthma. It is also useful for detecting unknown allergens, especially in occupational settings.1 It is an inhalation test using a chemical known as methacholine.2 It is sometimes referred to as the methacholine challenge test.

Fast Facts:

  • Do not smoke for 8 hours prior to the test, and do not take Atrovent or Combivent 12 hours prior to the test.3
  • Bronchial challenge testing must be done under the supervision of a physician, trained in the technique and risks.4
  • The bronchial challenge test may also be used to help diagnose the cause of a chronic cough.5
