Research Notes on Bromine
Bromine is a chemical element that is a red volatile liquid at room temperature.1 It's fumes are toxic and corrosive.1 Bromide salts are found in sea water, and the largest bromine reserve in the United States is located in Union and Columbia County, Arkansas.1 Bromine is used in making flame retardant materials.1
Fast Facts:
- It is also used for water purification, in pharmaceuticals, and in the manufacture of ethylene dibromide.2
- Historically, bromine was used in sedatives, but most of these compounds are no longer on the United States market.3
- Bromine exposure can be lethal, but survivors may have long term long damage to the lungs, kidneys or brain.3
