Research Notes on Broken Ankle
An ankle joint is made up of the tibia, fibula, and talus.1 These bones are susceptible to stress, stubbing, twisting, and trauma.2 A broken ankle can affect one or more bones, as well as injure the surrounding connecting tissues (ligaments.)3
Fast Facts:
- There is an increase in the number and severity of broken ankles in the past 30 years due in part to a more active and older population.3
- Symptoms are severe pain, deformity, and protrusion of bone fragments.2
- Anyone with a broken ankle must discuss the treatment plan with an orthopedic doctor.4
