Research Notes on Breathing Exercises for COPD
Breathing exercises can be beneficial if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Breathing exercises can help you to get more oxygen while strengthening your breathing muscles.1 Exercises such as pursed lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing can be done a few times daily.1
Fast Facts:
- Pursed lip breathing should be done while exercising to prevent dizziness and shortness of breath.
- Diaphragmatic breathing should be done on your back when you first begin. You can gradually progress to doing it while standing and walking.2
- Breathing exercises can also alleviate stress and anxiety.2
