Research Notes on Breastmilk Allergy
Breastmilk is considered the perfect food for your baby and there is little to no likelihood of an actual breastmilk allergy.1 However, common foods in your diet can pass through your milk and cause an allergic reaction in your baby; these include cow's milk protein, soy, peanuts, and eggs.2 If you believe your baby has experienced an allergic reaction caused by breastmilk, it is recommended that you keep a diary of the foods that you eat to identify the cause of the allergic reaction.
Fast Facts:
- Breastmilk is the primary source of nutrition for newborn babies through the first year of life.1
- Most breastfed infants do not develop an allergy to foods passed through breastmilk.
- Observation of your baby's behavior after a feeding is useful when determining the presence of an allergy.2
- Some symptoms of an allergy may include fussiness, loose stools, gas, and colicky behavior.
- Elimination of certain foods from your diet may help to reduce the allergic reactions experienced by your baby.2
