Research Notes on Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery -- also known as reduction mammaplasty -- produces smaller breasts by removing fat, skin, and glandular tissue to reshape and resize the breasts.1 This may be performed for medical or cosmetic reasons.1 Most women who have breast reduction surgery do so due to constant back and neck pain, weight on the shoulders from bra straps, deteriorating posture, and an inability to participate in certain activities.2

Fast Facts:

  • More than 104,000 breast reduction surgeries were performed in 2006.2
  • Most women who have breast reduction surgury are very satisfied with their results.3
  • Men with gynecomastia can also benefit from breast reduction surgery.4
