Research Notes on Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is the rebuilding of a breast after a mastectomy (breast cancer surgery). The surgery reconstructs the breast so that it is about the same size and shape as it was naturally.1 Often this includes the addition of a natural-looking areola and nipple.1 Breast reconstruction can involve the use of implants or relocated flaps of the patient's own tissue.2
