Research Notes on Breast Cancer Myths
Due to the complexities of breast cancer, many myths surround the disease. Because of these myths, many women fail to either realize the risks they face or feel they are handed a death sentence once a diagnosis has been made. One common myth is that only women who have a family history of the disease will fall victim to it. The reality is that approximately 70% of the women diagnosed with the disease have no risk factors for breast cancer.1
Fast Facts:
- Myth: Breastfeeding increases the risk of breast cancer.2
- Myth: Using antiperspirants can lead to the development of breast cancer.3
- Myth: If cancer cells are exposed to air during a surgery, it will spread throughout the body.4
