A calcification is a deposit of the mineral calcium in the breast tissue. Calcifications appear as small white spots on a mammogram. There are two types of breast calcification, macrocalcification and microcalcification. Macrocalcifications are large deposits and are usually not related to cancer. Microcalcifications are specks of calcium that may be found in an area of rapidly dividing cells. Many microcalcifications clustered together may be a sign of cancer. Many women have one or more calcifications that show up on a mammogram.
Fast Facts:
- -- After a breast calcification is detected on a mammogram, a biopsy is performed to determine if it is benign or malignant.
- --Breast calcification that is found benign, have a 2% chance of turning malignant later and are watched under close surveillance.
- --After a benign calcification is diagnosed, there will be a follow-up mammogram done in 6 months and then 6 months after that.
- --If there are no changes within a year, only routine annual examinations are recommended thereafter.
