Research Notes on Breast Cancer

Worldwide, breast cancer is the fifth most common cause of cancer death. The first symptom of breast cancer is typically a lump that feels different from the surrounding breast tissue. Because the breast is composed of identical tissues in males and females, breast cancer also occurs in males, though it is less common.1

Fast Facts:

  • It is generally recommended that women perform a breast self-exam each month, as well as having an annual clinical exam.2
  • Women with a family history of breast cancer now have the option of having a BRCA test that checks for variations in the genetic structure that can predispose them to breast cancer.3
  • 2009 U.S. statistics estimate 192,370 new cases of female breast cancer and 1,910 new cases of male breast cancer. Deaths from breast cancer are estimated to be 40,170 in women and 400 in men.1
