Research Notes on Brain Size Linked to Autism

Researchers have discovered that children who suffer from autism have an enlarged portion of the brain compared to children without the disorder. Scientists have noted an enlargement in the area of the brain that reads facial cues in toddlers who have been diagnosed with autism. While researchers admit they have no idea of what causes this over-growth of the amygdala, this finding may prove very helpful in making an early diagnosis.1

Fast Facts:

  • Researchers state that the enlargement was noted at approximately two years of age, and stayed consistent for up to two years later.2
  • The particular area of the brain being studied typically develops between the ages of nine and 15 months, though researchers did not study children younger than aged two in this study.2
  • Researchers believe this latest finding will open more doors to understanding autism and provide the basis for further research.2
