Research Notes on Brain Lesions and Cocaine
Cocaine use is associated with brain lesions and hemorrhage.1 The drug plants itself in dopamine transport sites.1 This interferes with the natural flow of brain chemicals and causes an unnatural stockpile.1 The buildup causes a flow constriction in the blood vessels of the brain and can result in lesions, hypoxia, and stroke.1
Fast Facts:
- Cocaine use increases blood pressure which can result in brain lesions.2
- The reuptake of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin is blocked and results in the brain lesion risk.2
- The chemicals build up in the synaptic region of the brain and increase the risk of brain lesions.2
