Research Notes on Brain Injury Stem Cell Research
Brain injury stem cell research is an area that is filled with hope, and controversy. An ethical and moral debate surrounds the topic, which hampers research to a certain degree.1 In 2007 UC Irvine researchers discovered that mice who had undergone significant brain damage experience "enhanced memory" up to three months after receiving stem cell treatment.2
Fast Facts:
- Since 2003 the war in Iraq has produced 12,000 men and women with "grotesque" head injuries. Scientists hope that stem cell research may help them.3
- Bone marrow transplantation is a type of stem cell therapy.4
- It is believed that research in this area will allow us to eventually cure the incurable diseases.5
