Research Notes on Brain Imaging and Fibromyalgia
A new study suggests that changes in the levels of dopamine (a neurostransmitter) may explain why brain gray matter reduction is experienced by those with fibromyalgia. A previous study showed an association between gray matter reduction and fibromyalgia, but the reasoning for this was unknown. These findings shed light on a possible mechanism behind the brain abnormalities that fibromyalgia patients sometimes experience.1
Fast Facts:
- Data from 50 female patients was analyzed for this study.2
- A strong link between dopamine metabolism levels and gray matter density areas was also found.1
- This study appears in the Journal of Pain.
