Research Notes on Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy (radioactive seed implantation therapy) is a form of internal radiation treatment where radioactive sources are placed on or into cancer tissues. The two most common forms of treatment are low dose rate (LDR) permanent seeds and high dose rate (HDR).

- Commonly used in the treatment of cervical, endometrial, prostate and bile duct cancers as well as soft tissue sarcomas.1
- Also used to treat breast cancer and some cancers of the head and neck, lung, and esophagus.1
- Types of brachytherapy include: mold brachytherapy, strontium plaque, interstitial brachytherapy, intracavitary brachytherapy, intravascular brachytherapy, and electronic brachytherapy.2
- Brachytherapy reduces the risk of damage to healthy tissue compared to standard radiation therapy.1
