Research Notes on Bowel Obstruction

A bowel obstruction is a blockage in the intestines that prevents gas, fluids, or solids from moving through the intestines normally. Many different problems can cause a bowel obstruction, such as scar tissue from previous surgeries (adhesions), certain types of hernias, cancer, twisting of the intestines (intestinal volvulus), or diverticulitis.1 A suspected bowel obstruction needs to be evaluated by a doctor and may require medical or surgical treatment.

Fast Facts:

  • Most bowel obstructions happen in the small intestine.2
  • Patients who have had recent abdominal surgery or radiation are at a higher risk of developing a bowel obstruction.2
  • There is a very good prognosis for bowel obstruction when the cause is not a complication of cancer.3
  • Opioid medications can cause bowel obstruction.4
