Research Notes on Botulism Symptoms
Botulism is caused by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. There are three main kinds of botulism; food-borne, wound and infant. Food-borne and wound botulism present the same type of symptoms. Those symptoms may include difficulty swallowing or speaking, trouble breathing, double vision, facial weakness, nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. Usually the first sign of infant botulism is constipation. Other symptoms of infant botulism include floppy movements, trouble controlling the head, weak cry, drooping eyelids, difficulty sucking or feeding and lethargy.1 In all three types of botulism, if untreated, these symptoms may progress to cause paralysis in various parts of the body.2
Fast Facts:
- Symptoms of food-borne botulism typically begin between 12 and 36 hours after eating the contaminated source.1
- Wound botulism symptoms usually start around 10 days after the bacteria enters the body.1
- This is a medical emergency since botulinum neurotoxin is considered one of the most potent, lethal substances known.2
