Research Notes on Botulism
Botulism is a rare paralytic illness caused by botulin. There are 3 kinds of botulism -- foodborne, infant and wound. All can be fatal. An average of 110 cases are reported in the US each year.

- Of the 110 cases reported each year, 72% are infant botulism, and 3% are sound botulism.
- Normal symptoms of food-borne botulism usually occur between 12-36 hours after consuming the botulinum toxin. However, can occur as early as 6 hours or as late as 10 days.
- Wound botulism has a longer incubation, usually between 4-14 days.
