Research Notes on Botulinum Toxin
The botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin that is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria.1 While being one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances in the world, it is used to treat muscle spasms and as a cosmetic treatment.1 The botulinum toxin is the same preparation as Botox.1
Fast Facts:
- Used in the treatment of cervical dystonia.2
- Also used for blepharospasm, spasticity, strabismus, smooth muscle disorders and sweating disorders.3
- When used for cosmetic purposes, it decreases the appearance of fine lines, frown lines and crow's feet.3
