Research Notes on Body Plethysmography

Body plethsmography is a pulmonary function test which determines how much air is present in the lungs when you take a deep breath and how much air is left in your lungs after you exhale as much as you can.1 Body plethysmography is used to measure total lung capacity and residual volume (RV), which is the amount of air that remains in your lungs after you exhale.2

Fast Facts:

  • During whole-body plethysmography, individuals are enclosed in a chamber equipped to measure pressure, flow, and volume changes while spirometry, bronchial challenge and other tests are performed.3
  • The test involves rapid and normal breathing and is not painful, but individuals may feel short of breath or light-headed.4
  • Individuals preparing to take the test should avoid smoking as well as heavy meals and heavy exercise for six hours before the test.5
