Research Notes on Body Odor

Bacterial overgrowth combined with sweat from the apocrine and eccrine glands causes odor in parts of the body such as armpits, genitals and feet. Some individuals sweat more than others and therefore may have more body odor. This is due in part to the number of apocrine or eccrine glands in the body, gender and ethnicity.

Fast Facts:

  • Body odor is customarily associated with poor hygiene or foods consumed but it also can be caused by medical and skin conditions.
  • Body odor typically does not present itself until after puberty in males and females.
  • Stimulants such as caffeine can contribute to an increase in sweat production and body odor
  • Whether body odor is offensive varies across cultures
  • Regular bathing, wearing breathable fabrics and diet changes can help combat body odor.
