Research Notes on Bloody Stools
Bloody stools, also called hematochezia, is a symptom that is commonly associated with injuries or disorders of the digestive tract.1 Stools which contain blood are typically black or tarry in color, but can also be red or maroon colored.1 You should contact your physician immediately if you notice bloody stools. Children may occasionally have bloody stools with little cause for concern; however, repeated episodes should be brought to the attention of your pediatrician.1
Fast Facts:
- Although bright red blood in the stool is often caused by hemorrhoids or an anal fissure, other more serious medical conditions need to be considered, like diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal cancer. 2
- Various medications have been linked to bloody stools.3
- Treatment options depend upon the cause of bleeding.1
