Research Notes on Blood Type A
Attached to the surface of red blood cells are antigens, a type of protein. There are two different types of antigens: Type A and type B.1 People can have one of four main blood types, and each type may be classified as positive or negative: A, B, O, and AB.2 There are actually many other blood types depending on the antigens on the surface of the red blood cells, but these are more rare and are considered "minor" types.3
Fast Facts:
- If your blood as the A antigen, you have type A.2
- If you have neither A or B, you are type O.2
- If you have both A and B antigens, you have blood type AB.2
- The presence of a rhesus antigen indicates a positive. For example, and blood type A+ has an A antigen and a rhesus antigen.3
- The lack of a rhesus antigen indicates a negative. For example, blood type A- has an A antigen but not a rhesus antigen.3
