Research Notes on Blood Type

Blood type is determined by inheritance. One gene from each parent is inherited to establish your blood type. Those two genes form a protein (or antigen) that exists on the surface of all red blood cells. This antigen is capable of stimulating an immune response.1

Fast Facts:

  • There are four major blood groups A, O, B, and AB.2
  • The four major groups are divided into Rh Positive and Rh Negative types.2
  • Those with any blood type can receive O Rh Negative blood.2
  • Those with Type O must receive Type O blood.3
