Research Notes on Blood Thinners
A blood thinner, also known as an anticoagulant, is a medication which is used to prevent clotting. A common type of blood thinner is called heparin. Blood thinners are used in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke. They can also be used prior to surgery as a preventive measure against the development of blood clotting.1

- The most commonly used blood thinner is aspirin.2
- Common side effects include gas, diarrhea, and bloating.3
- You should inform your health care provider if you suffer from aneurysm, type 2 diabetes, diverticulitis, hemophilia, liver disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, or have recently went through childbirth before taking a blood thinner.4
